The primary goal of this presentation will be to contrast different approaches to bring about social and political change. The model of an "enlightened" but gated community will be contrasted with the notion of empowering the largest possible number of people by building a scalable social network that maps out people's interests and enables them to discover activities they are likely to paritcipate in. These two extremes are part of a larger spectrum of social networks that will be summarized. Perceived "ideal" models for both approaches are briefly described, and a competitive coexistence is suggested.
