Web skeleton

A web skeleton is a site that is largely unfinished, but provides every visitor with

  • a mission statement
  • the tools necessary to gradually move towards realizing that mission.

In order for a web site to qualify as a true web skeleton by this definition, the visitor must be given these tools immediately, and they must be able to collaborate.

Wikis are obviously great tools for creating web skeletons, but they generally impose many restrictions which can only be altered by the system administrator: design, link pattern, plug-ins and extensions, and of course the codebase of the wiki engine itself.

A truly powerful web skeleton would have as few of these restrictions as possible. In order to accomplish this, the site could tie into an existing trust network. However, even with good trust mechanisms, it is likely that some level of sandboxing and possibly forking would have to be supported by the web skeleton software.
